Paradise Lost was published in 1667. It is an epic of the fall of man written in twelve books, of which Books I, II, and are the best. Milton had been destined for the Church, but while in Cambridge gave up his intention of taking orders That theology continued throughout his life to occupy his thoughts is evidenced by the theme of "Paradise Lost". "Paradise Regained", the sequel to Milton's greatest work, is inferior to it in inspiration, but finer in technique
