Collectors Beware...

Contrary to what you may read on eBay and other bookstore websites,
GLH books published by Grosset & Dunlap are NOT FIRST EDITIONS
. Any Grosset & Dunlap edition
is at best a second edition. Many are much later reprints. Don't be fooled by sellers who are uninformed.

A Chautauqua Idyl

Grace's first published book (not counting Auntie Belle's gift) was written to earn enough money for a trip to New York's Chautauqua for herself and her family from their home in Florida. It worked! This is Grace's own hand-painted copy.

The Forgotten Friend

The Forgotten FriendThis undated little booklet was produced as part of the National Congregational Missionary Societies' Christmas Offering campaign. It included a beautiful offering box, and the idea behind the campaign is clear when you read the story.

From the inside cover: During the weeks immediately preceding Christmas Offering BoxChristmas, as presents are being purchased for friends and relatives, this Christmas box, having been placed in the home, will be a reminder of the debt of gratitude owed to the truest and best of Friends, and the question will come, "What offering can we make that will be most pleasing to Him who gave Himself for the world?"

Marcia Schuyler

Marcia Schuyler

Marcia Schuyler is the book that really launched Grace's career as an author. It's based on a family story. There were really Schuylers and Spaffords in her family tree. Grace's famous-artist cousin, E.L. Henry loaned paintings for the illustrations. Interested? Write me and I'll tell you all about it. The characters continue in Phoebe Deane and then Miranda.

Pansies for Thoughts

Grace lovingly chose these passages from her aunt's Pansy Pansies for Thoughts Books and matched them with Bible verses for each day of the year. Modern reprints of "Grace Livingston Hill For Each New Day" leave out the references telling which Pansy Book each quote is from, but add the chapter and verse for the Bible verses.

The War Romance of the Salvation Army (with Evangeline Booth)

Contrary to what the title suggests to modern readers, this book is about the "War Adventure" of the Salvation Army. It's not a love story as you might suppose, but a real-life retelling of the work of the Salvation Lassies in World War I. Their fearlessness and dedication while serving on the battle lines is astounding. This is a long read, but well worth it if you stick with it. It helps if you've done your homework on WWI before you begin. Grace assumes you know what it was all about. Readers of the era had just lived through it, so many references will be unfamiliar to modern readers.
