The Scottish Chiefs

Written by Jane Porter, 1810.

Many editions of this history of Sir William Wallace and Robert Brude (often in several volumes) have appeared over the last 200 years. The book pictured here belonged to Grace's husband, Rev. T.G.F.Hill.

An 1895 review in "The Bookman: A Literary Journal" notes:

"Innumerable editions have been published since then; it has been translated into several languages, and circulated all over the world; and it has received the stamp of approbation and found favor during successive generations from eminent critics and authors..It is one of the best tales of adventure that can be put into the hands of young people, but none can resist its brilliancy and power."
