Katharine’s Yesterday

Katharine's Yesterday

1895 • Lothrop Publishing Company

This short story collection, whose long title is “Katharine’s Yesterday and Other Christian Endeavor Stories”, is one of Grace’s earliest published in book form. She submitted her writing to numerous Christian periodicals in her early career. This volume, put out by her aunt’s publisher, also collects a large number of stories written expressly for Christian Endeavor’s weekly publication where both Grace and her aunt “Pansy” built a large readership.

From The Courier-Journal, Louisville, Kentucky in October 1895:

The Growth of the Christian Endeavor movement has called into service a corps of writers whose pens have been devoted to the presentation of sketch, story, verse and essay, all in furtherance of the objects of their helpful organization. One of these is Mrs. Grace Livingston Hill. Her contributions to the religious journals which circulate most widely among the Christian Endeavor membership are mostly of the bright and entertaining, but helpful and suggestive story-form, each one of them designed to inculcate the spirit or enforce the principles that underlie the Christian Endeavor movement. The best and most recent of these stories have been collected by Mrs. Hill into book form and published in an attractive volume by the Lothrop Publishing Company under the title of “Katharine’s Yesterday,” its leading and longest story. All the stories are good; all of them may be read with interest and taken to heart by all earnest seekers after good, whether members or not of the Society of Christian Endeavor.
